Plant our Future

Once we officially decided to carry out the project it was decided that Udawatte Kele Sanctuary is the best venue as it will not only provide space for the plants we plant but also preserve them for the future generations. Thus enhancing sustainability.
Therefore we met the officials of the Forest Department in Kandy and obtained permission from the Divisional and Regional Forest Offices. It was agreed that they would give us a pathway to maintain inside the sanctuary. Next we made a list of plants and with collaboration with Agriculture department obtained them. The following medicinal plants were chosen

1. Aththora
2.  Nelli
3. Star Fruit
4. Maha Niththa
5. Ranawara
6. Mayurapada Endaru
7. Pokuruwada
8. Badakiriththa
9. Thebu
10. Kenahinda
11. Ugurassa
12. Sapathilla

On the day of the project the Club members met at the entrance of the Udawatta Kele Sanctuary on proceeded to the given location. We were allocated a pathway beside which we were to plant the medicinal plants.  We cleared the area slightly and made planting spots ready and finally planted them. Also we had to make a bamboo fence around each plant to protect it from wild animals. We have undertaken the responsibility to maintain the plants in year to come. The plants will be tagged by us and the area that the plants our located will be maintained by us which will bear our name and therefore it will promote rotaract as well.

Essence of Water

Every new day, every new project brings a challenge, and those we the team Kandy like to take as new learning experiences. There are things that seem impossible, but at the end of the day we will succeed and learn to value the journey and the lesson to take it on further in life. We can always overcome them if we put our heart and soul with commitment.
“Essence of water” is a great project done by the Rotaract Club of Kandy with the purpose of serving the community. Basically the project was; NE/Madankandura Vidyalaya Munwatta Walapane is a school who is lacking a proper water supply for their daily needs. The students have to walk around 750m to bring water. We the team Kandy as people who are passionately looking ahead with sheer enthusiasm and energy to be a service to someone, identified this requirement of this school and took steps to give a helping hand to them for the sake of humanity. We estimated the financial requirement for this worthy cause and after collecting the required amount we started working on that. The parents of the school children and the villagers helped us a lot to make this dream of innocent children a reality. Within a time period of a week we were able to successfully provide them with a proper water supply. This project was held on 25 th of May 2016. Rtr.Ushan Malshika took the initiative of organizing this project.

DARE

The Project “Dare” is a Professional development project. Project chairs were appointed at a club meeting and the entire project was planned out and carried out by the project chairs with the permission of the President.

First we got the participants from our club and divided them in to 8 teams and informed them via text messages. Then we Gave tasks to them with deadlines and asked them to complete those tasks and submit them before the deadline. Tasks were based on a medical camp which we assumed as a project idea. Teams had to make plan project proposals and they had to do 10 different activities in order to complete the project successfully. All the participated teams completed the given tasks.

Help Them Rise Again

Silhouette in nature has always been an inspiration to us as rotaractors. Nature will do wonder, also at the same time nature will stand against human.
“Help them rise again” is a flood relief project organized by the Rotaract Club of Kandy within a very short time period, being spontaneous while joining hands with NethFM and Rotaract Club of Neptune Edification, which depicts our spark for community service.
The project was handled by Rtr.Kenneth Cottling and it was held on 19 th to 23 rd of May 2016 at Kandy City Center (KCC). We collected dry rations, water, clothes, and medicine to donate for the families and victims of flood and landslides. The distribution of the goods took place from 21 st to 23 rd of May 2016. These goods were distributed among people who

were affected by floods and landslides in the areas of Kadugannawa, Gampola, Gelioya, and Colombo. The media publicity was given by the NethFM and through Facebook.
Through this project we were able to take part and interact directly with the affected groups of people, look into their needs, share the awful experiences and be a strength to them. Summed up in one word I would call this project amazing! It is an experience that will be forever etched in our memory mainly because of all that we learned and all the wonderful generous people we met along the way.

In the evening the lanterns were lit by the members along with buckets and oil lamps around the premises with the assistance of the children.

A Snack to Suffice Hunger

Lives among us are different to one another and the problems among us are way different. Yet leaving the loved ones likewise, never the solution. As we always believe small things can make a world of difference.
Rotaractors of Kandy Rotaract Club got-together and organized a small snack time for street beggars. We gave all the beggars around in Kandy city a parcel of short-eats, with the intention of being a support to satisfy their hunger. This was done after one of our tremendous project “Fire Fighter” on 7 th of May 2016. The project was indeed an immense success. It’s hard to see our mankind suffering, living in streets. This project was done under the avenue of community service and chaired by Rtr.Rehan and Rtr.Jalinie.
Through this project we were able to distribute about 30 food parcels around in Kandy city, to satisfy the hunger of human beings who live in streets, with a collection of tragic memories and

a heart hardened for being helpless. Also this project brought us happiness within a painful moment seeing the joy in their faces after receiving these small food parcels.
