Vesak Lantern Project

The Vesak Lantern Project is a signature project done by the Rotaract Club of Kandy organized in celebration of Vesak Festival. This year Vesak Lanterns project was held on the 29th pf April 2018. It was organized in collaboration with the Interact Club of Hillwood College, Kandy. The Rotaractors and Interactors went to the Childrens’ Home at around 8 a.m, with things needed to make Vesak lanterns. There were 35 children in the Children's Home and we made thirty lanterns with the children from morning to evening. We also provided them with a small healthy snack of fruits and chocolates. We added more to this worthy cause by donating some books for their library as well.

Through this project we were able to spend some quality time with these children while teaching them to make Vesak Lanterns, and also the children too enjoyed our company and were extremely happy to be with us. We were able to give them the love and affection which they are seeking for, even if it was for a short period of time.

Friendship Beyond the Sea

“Friendship Beyond the Sea” was a project conducted by Team Kandy under the avenue International Services in order to celebrate the International day of Happiness which was held on the 20th of March.

This was an online project where all the members of the club, together, contacted rotaractors from various districts via social media to ask them the question "What make you happy as a rotaractor?". By the end of the week we gathered more than fifty responses that carried various sentiments each rotaractor shared about their experience as fellow rotaractors. These comments were then published on the official Facebook page of the club.

This project provided the platform for the members of the club to make connections with international rotaractors and enabled them to make new friends through rotaract.

Essence of Water

Every new day, every new project brings a challenge and team Kandy takes those as new learning experiences. There are things that seem impossible, but at the end of the day we will succeed and we learn to value the journey and the lesson to take it on further in life. We can always overcome them if we put our heart and soul with commitment. “Essence of water” which is an outstanding project done by the Rotaract Club of Kandy with the purpose of serving the community was held on the 24th of February 2018.

Galaha Hyth Village is a village which lacks a proper water supply for their daily needs. The villagers have to walk around 750m to bring water daily. We, as members of team Kandy, who are passionately looking ahead with sheer enthusiasm and energy to be a service to someone, identified this requirement of this village and took steps to give a helping hand to them for the sake of humanity. We estimated the financial requirement for this worthy cause and after collecting the required amount we started working on the project. The villagers also helped us a lot to make this dream of innocent people a reality. Within a short period of one month of hard work we were able to successfully provide them with a proper water supply.

Factory Visit

A factory visit was organized by Team Kandy on the 2nd of February 2018, for the club members as a professional development project. The members visited Pambegama estate, which is the only manual rubber factory operating in Sri Lanka. Members started the journey from learning about the tea industry. The members involved in the process practically, along with the useful lectures given by the experts of the industry. Next the members visited the rubber factory and learnt almost everything about the rubber processing.

It was indeed a great new exposure for the members for two of the dominating industries in Sri Lanka.
